The Client

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Industrial Accidents (DIA) oversees the state’s workers’ compensation system. Their role is to ensure that all parties involved—injured workers, employers, insurers, attorneys, and health care providers—have the resources they need to comply with its laws and regulations.

The Challenge

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts DIA was facing an urgent deadline: they had less than six months to migrate their data from a physical data center to the cloud before the location housing all their crucial information was set to be demolished. (Literally.)

This wasn’t their first attempt at migration. They had tried to move to a cloud environment in the past, hoping to save money on real estate costs and benefit from modern cloud capabilities. However, their previous vendor had been assigned to this project for about a year and a half without making any progress. As a result, this client had been forced into a tough position: they needed to complete this migration fast or risk losing crucial data.

Having witnessed the quality of our work firsthand after a successful previous Oracle project, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts DIA turned to M&S Consulting for help, confident we could save the day.

The Solution

We rose to the occasion, ensuring all of the client’s data was successfully migrated before it was too late. From planning to execution and consistent coordination with the client’s application engineers and prime contractors, we worked seamlessly under pressure to complete the project a week ahead of schedule. Our swift service ended up being critical—because an unexpected fire struck shortly before their data center’s scheduled demolition. (Yes, it was quite the turn of events!)

One of this project’s complexities was that even though the DIA was using Oracle software, they couldn’t migrate to the Oracle cloud. This is because, while Oracle offers robust cloud solutions today, these offerings were not yet fully developed at the time of this client’s migration. As a government agency, the DIA has to collect a significant amount of sensitive personally identifiable information (PII). That meant they needed a cloud solution that would be 100% secure and compliant. Therefore, they chose to migrate their Oracle workloads into AWS.

This project involved migrating several of the client’s applications to their new cloud environment—including the pivotal customer management system that allows them to process worker’s compensation claims. Leveraging the best AWS services to optimize their workflows and allow for a smooth, secure transition, we seamlessly upgraded the client’s Oracle environment to enhance the system’s performance, storage, and networking.

 The Transformation

Our consultants demonstrated expertise under pressure, delivering critical solutions where the previous vendor had failed. With the migration complete, the DIA now benefits from:

  • Reduced real estate costs
  • Advanced cloud computing capabilities
  • An enhanced customer management system

Since this project, our relationship with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts DIA has flourished. We continue to maintain and upgrade their Oracle system within AWS, and are frequently called on to assist with other challenges. The client has expressed interest in expanding our collaboration to other divisions, and we look forward to helping them continue to grow.
