Build a better data integration and sharing strategy

Today’s higher education institutions are facing a multitude of challenges around data analysis, security, and increasingly hybrid architectures. The issue of how to balance ongoing security challenges while connecting cloud and on-premises applications is common across institutions. These challenges may lead many organizations to develop an integration strategy to help in the alignment of these increasingly complex architectures. However, limiting the focus to only integrations can become overly technically focused. Instead of developing an integration strategy, institutions should instead take a holistic approach to data sharing and develop an information strategy.  As information is a valuable asset for organizations and … Read More

M&S helps direct you on your journey to the cloud

Is your institution moving to the cloud? Are you adopting a cloud strategy, such as Cloud First, where the institution takes the plunge and jumps in with both feet, or perhaps an Opportunistic Cloud or Experimental Cloud strategy where they test the waters with select projects? Perhaps your institution has instead elected to stay out of the cloud entirely and to simply watch from a distance. Each of these strategies can be appropriate in the right context, but adopting a cloud strategy that works for your institution should be a priority. With any of these strategies, you need to ensure … Read More

Does the SYS user really become inaccessible in Oracle Database running on Amazon Web Services (AWS)?

Is the inaccessibility of the SYS user on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Oracle only on Relational Database Service (RDS) implementations?

I had heard from a fellow DBA colleague that a known problem with Oracle Databases on AWS was that, in certain cases, the SYS user was not available to the DBA. Curious (and slightly alarmed), I did a little research online and discovered more than a few forum posts asking what to do about the apparent inability to execute common DBA tasks as SYS running Oracle Database on AWS. DBAs who were accustomed to being able to run DBMS_CRYPTO or install APEX from the command line were wondering how to get their work done in the cloud. In response, AWS had … Read More

Between a rock and a hard place: How does Oracle bug 28793062 affect Banner schools’ plans to upgrade to 18c?

Ellucian rescinded support for 12.2.0.2, AKA 18c due to a severe defect.

12.2.0.2 was renamed 18c following Oracle’s new naming convention. “18” for its 2018 release (cloud: 18.1.0 in 2/18 and on-premises: 18.3.0 on 7/18). In October of 2018, Ellucian rescinded support for 12.2.0.2, AKA 18c due to a severe defect. Some PL/SQL procedures in Banner including arguments based on table%rowtypes would no longer compile, complaining that a “PL/SQL package with user-defined type is throwing PLS-00801: [Unexpected Fragile External Reference.])”… and there was no workaround. Ellucian’s rescission of support for 18c with Banner came at a tricky time for schools. IT departments were already feeling pressure to stay on top of upgrades … Read More

Live On Campus with M&S Consulting

Harvard Business Publishing is an organization responsible for strong corporate learning programs and prestigious publications such as the Harvard Business Review. M&S Consulting was tasked originally with performing a migration of HBP’s infrastructure from on-prem to the AWS cloud. The initial solution focused on a traditional lift-and-shift migration to get the HBP data and application infrastructure to the AWS cloud. M&S Consulting utilized infrastructure-as-code through AWS CloudFormation to build a repeatable, versioned infrastructure for the migrated applications. Once in the cloud, the solution focused on re-architecting and optimizing existing applications to take advantage of cloud infrastructure capabilities, as well as … Read More

“X” is for Extensibility, Ellucian XE for Banner

One choice that faced institutions implementing Ellucian’s Banner ERP was deciding between the proverbial “vanilla” install, where schools conformed their processes to Ellucian’s pre-packaged solution; and a highly customized environment that better suited existing business requirements, but required coding customizations not only at the outset, but on a recurring basis… because customizations needed to be re-coded each time Banner re-released a particular form. Ellucian is promising to take some of the pain out of this choice with Banner XE. The “XE” stands for eXtensible Ecosystem, and a key feature is a complete redesign of their administrative and self-service forms. Simpler … Read More
